Karolinska researcher axed

The Karolinska Institute has said it will not extend the employment of Paolo Macchiarini, a surgeon cleared of misconduct around the manufacture and transplant of synthetic trachea, when his contract ends in November.

Until 30 November, Macchiarini will be required to use his working hours to phase out his research, the institute said in a statement on 4 February. The head of Macchiarini’s department has been instructed to ensure that the work of Macchiarini’s research group is dismantled, it said.

An article in Science says an email from Karolinska Institutet spokesman Claes Keisu said Macchiarini "overexploited the Karolinska Institute’s brand”.
