Nordic radar gets green light

Eiscat 3D, a three-dimensional imaging radar system to be sited across Finland, Norway and Sweden, has received approval to begin construction.

The €70-million radar system will aim to get more information about how solar storms in space can affect the atmosphere in the Arctic. It will be built by the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association, which has members from Finland, Sweden Norway, the UK, Japan and China.

The three radar stations will be set up near Kiruna in Sweden, in Karesuvanto in Finland, and in Skibotn in Norway. Construction will start in autumn.
