Permanent contracts on the up

The proportion of research and teaching staff on permanent contracts in universities has increased by 2 percentage points between 2015 and 2016.

In 2016, 28 per cent of teaching and research staff were on fixed-term employment, the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) said in a report on 14 June. The proportion of staff on permanent contracts has gone up by 6 percentage points since 2008, it said.

Women have benefited more from the increase. The proportion of women with permanent contracts went up by 8 percentage points—from 62 per cent to 70 per cent between 2008 and 2016—while for men the increase was 3 percentage points, from 70 per cent to 73.
