Sweden’s early-career researchers oppose Plan S

The Young Academy of Sweden has joined the ranks of those opposing Plan S, the initiative by research funders to increase uptake of open-access publication.

Plan S will not reduce the costs of academic publishing and is not the right way to go about increasing access to research results, the academy said in a statement on 15 November. Under Plan S, funders will require the researchers they support to make their results openly available immediately through approved journals and platforms from 2020.

“Young scientists are not in need of a revolution today!” the statement said. “They need a predictable system for dissemination of scientific findings and results, a system which remains robust over time and which has acceptance within the science community.”
