Foundation calls for more evidence-based politics

Sweden’s next government needs to use more scientific evidence and make research a part of everyday life, according to the country’s strategic research foundation.

With Swedish politicians caught up in post-election wrangling over who can form a government, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research issued a set of recommendations on 10 September to counteract what it said has been a deterioration in the standing of science among politicians in recent years. The recommendations were signed by several dozen leading academics and heads of industry associations.

To help politicians use scientific advice, the government should commission and distribute more “systematic summaries” of research-based knowledge, the foundation said. It recommended that more independent experts should be brought in to advise ministers and their staff.
