Universities team up for pan-European online courses

Academic institutions across Europe have joined an EU initiative, OpenupEd, to offer Massive Open Online Courses to an international audience.

About 40 MOOCs, free courses run online that anyone can follow, are to be made available in 12 languages initially. They are to cover a variety of topics including mathematics, climate change, languages, and creative writing.

Fred Mulder, chairman of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities’ task force on open education, is leading the initiative. “Our aim is to respond to the need for a more accessible system of higher education, which puts the learner at the centre,” he said.
