Portugal needs to urgently revise the financing of its universities if it intends to remain competitive in science, according to the head of the country's association of rectors.
In an interview with Research Europe Antonio Cunha, rector of the University of Minho, says he wants to boost the financial autonomy of Portuguese universities during his term. He also wants to supervise a government report to guarantee adequate long-term funding for universities, and improve their autonomy.
“The level of educational and scientific autonomy in Portugal is reasonably good and can be compared with the best of Europe, but the administrative and the financial autonomy has been restricted in recent years due to the austerity measures,” he says.
