Caution urged on university mergers

The European University Association has warned that as more universities contemplate mergers, they are tending to underestimate the difficulties and costs involved.

A report published by the EUA on 23 April says that mergers undertaken for financial reasons are unlikely to work, and calls on governments and universities to put academic interests ahead of financial goals.

The report follows efforts by a number of EU member states—notably Denmark and France—to streamline their university systems by encouraging mergers. It says that 67 university mergers were implemented between 2007 and 2014, up from 22 between 2000 and 2006.
