Karolinska surgeon found guilty of misconduct

Karolinska Institute researcher Paolo Macchiarini carried out a “systematic misrepresentation” of data in his work involving trachea transplants, an external review has found.

Macchiarini, a thoracic surgeon and visiting professor at the Swedish institute, has carried out work in transplanting both donor and synthetic tracheas that have been treated with stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow.

In November, the institute commissioned an external investigation following a complaint by four doctors at the Karolinska University Hospital: Matthias Corbascio, Thomas Fux, Karl-Henrik Grinnemo and Oscar Simonson. Their complaint stated that they had found discrepancies between the results of a Lancet paper authored by Macchiarini and the medical records of the patients.
