Brain council calls for more funding to fight mental illness

More money should be spent on brain research to close existing disparities member states on quality of treatment, the European Brain Council has said.

The council organised an event in Brussels on 22 June, during which researchers argued that Europe is falling behind on research spending related to brain diseases. The conference saw the presentation of a report, “’The value of treatment for brain disorders”, which states that the EU and its member states spend just over €3 a year per patient on research into brain disorders

As a result, access to treatment in many member states is getting worse, the report said. The panel in Brussels heard that wide disparities still exist between and within member states in terms of detecting and treating brain diseases.
