‘Grave concern’ over academic detained in Iran

The campaign group Scholars at Risk has launched an appeal to support Ahmadreza Djalali, a medical researcher who was arrested in Iran more than a year ago.

Djalali is an Iranian-born resident of Sweden who teaches disaster medicine at the University of Eastern Piedmont in Italy and the Free University of Brussels. He was detained in April 2016 while travelling in Iran, and could face capital punishment for alleged espionage.

On 21 July, Scholars at Risk called on academics to send emails and letters to Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, urging him to drop the charges against Djalali and release him from prison.
