‘Global crisis’ of academic repression

Academics are suffering an intense barrage of personal and institutional attacks from national authorities and militant groups around the world, a report from the campaign organisation Scholars at Risk has warned.

Free to Think 2017, published on 26 September, analysed 257 incidents of repression or violence that took place in 35 countries between September 2016 and August 2017. These included killings and disappearances, wrongful imprisonments, travel restrictions and institutional closures or takeovers.

Of the incidents analysed, about a quarter took place in Europe. The vast majority of these happened in Turkey, but there were also incidents in Russia, Poland, Belgium, Hungary and Belarus. Thousands of researchers and students were affected.
