Allea, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, has granted full membership to Turkey’s Bilim Akademisi.
The academy, which was set up in 2011, had been an associate member of Allea since 2014. It gained full membership, which confers proposing powers and voting rights, on 4 September.
Bilim Akademisi was established in response to intervention by the Turkish government in the membership of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (Tüba). Fifty-two of 82 elected members of Tüba resigned, 17 of whom went on to found Bilim Akademisi as an independent society.
