MEPs urge support for academic freedom, amid internal squabbles

The European Parliament is set to call on EU leaders to show their support for academic freedom, but one political group has accused another of weakening the call.

The Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted a draft report on academic freedom on 21 November. The report calls on the European Commission and European Council to explicitly recognise the importance of academic freedom in their statements, policies and actions.

Socialists and Democrats MEP Wajid Khan, the Parliament’s lead on the initiative, said the report was a “huge success” and that he was “proud that the Parliament will recommend stringent academic freedom measures”.
