Asia and the United States dominate the top slots of a global ranking of cities by the volume of their high-quality research outputs.

Cities in the US claimed six of the top 10 spots in the 2018 update of the Nature Index, which was published on 1 November. The index is a database from academic publisher Springer Nature that records the author affiliations of research papers published in top natural science journals.

Beijing claimed the top spot, by hosting authors named on 4,396 articles published in 82 natural sciences journals deemed high quality by two panels of researchers active in the life and physical sciences. New York metropolitan area in the US claimed a close second place, with 4,383 articles, while the Boston-Cambridge-Newton axis in the US took third place with 3,917 articles.
