The Central European University has announced that it is relocating many of its activities from Budapest to Vienna, having been forced to do so by the Hungarian government.

All of the degree programmes the CEU offers that are accredited in the United States will be moved, the university announced on 3 December. It said that from 1 January 2019 it will not be able to accept new students in Hungary, but that students who are already enrolled will be able to complete their studies in Budapest.

“CEU has been forced out,” the university’s rector Michael Ignatieff (pictured) said. “This is unprecedented.”
