Study underlines demand for European University networks

A survey of cross-border European higher education partnerships has concluded that participants support the EU’s planned networks of European Universities, because they currently face funding constraints and other difficulties.

The survey, carried out by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre science service to inform plans for European Universities, elicited responses from 169 transnational partnerships involving European higher education institutions, the JRC reported in December 2018. 

Among these, only 38 per cent involved all three fields of activity—higher education, research and innovation—that European Universities are intended to encompass. Most of the collaboration occurred at the departmental level, with only 41 per cent involving the whole institution, as European Universities are intended to.
