Organisations cooperating on improving research assessment

The European University Association and the association of research funders and performers Science Europe have said they are working together to make research assessment fairer.

In a joint statement on 14 May, EUA and Science Europe said that they would foster talks among their member organisations to help improve assessment. The EUA represents more than 800 universities and rectors conferences in 48 countries, while Science Europe is an association of 36 funders and research performing organisations.

Assessment should rely less on “reductionist” quantitative metrics, and more on qualitative approaches, the organisations said. They added that they intend to support efforts to develop and implement new criteria and methods for “fairer and more transparent assessment”.
