The European University Association has come out in “strong support” for an initiative that aims to “keep locally relevant research alive” by encouraging its publication in other languages besides English.
The Helsinki Initiative on Multilingualism in Scholarly Communication “promotes equality between different needs”, the EUA said in its 6 June endorsement.
It said that work published in a language other than English deserves equal merit in research assessment, and that this is particularly important in Europe, where research has broad cultural and linguistic diversity.
