EU bank providing €100m to Galician universities

Investment is intended to drive growth and protect jobs

The European Investment Bank has agreed to loan €100 million to public universities in the Spanish region of Galicia, claiming the investment will help drive innovation-based growth, develop patents and safeguard almost 900 highly qualified R&D jobs.

The funding will support 170 research groups in the north western Spanish region until 2023, the EIB announced on 27 January. Mariya Gabriel, the EU’s R&D commissioner, said the funding—backed by the EU R&D programme—was provided “to create jobs for young researchers and help develop the region’s smart specialisation strategy”.
