Commission plans would ‘undermine’ goal of reducing EU’s R&D divide, says Guild

A group of European universities has said it is “concerned” that the European Commission intends to stop allowing EU regional funding to be used to directly support research in universities, adding that such a move would widen divisions in the bloc.

The Commission department for regional policy intends to cut off direct support for university research through the European Regional Development Fund in the 2021-27 EU budget period, the Guild of European Research Intensive Universities warned on 30 October.
