Renewed fears for academic facing death penalty

Reports say Swedish-Iranian researcher Ahmadreza Djalali will be executed by 21 May

The European University Association has issued a renewed call for the release of Swedish-Iranian disaster medicine researcher Ahmadreza Djalali, following reports he will be executed by the Iranian state in the coming weeks.

According to Reuters, Iran’s ISNA news agency reported last week that Djalali (pictured) will be executed by 21 May. He was arrested and charged with spying in Iran in 2016, and later convicted of corruption and sentenced to death, but denies all charges against him.
