500 European institutions sign up to animal research transparency

European Animal Research Association hails milestone in push for ethical treatment of animals in research

There are now 500 biomedical institutions in Europe that have signed agreements to be open about their use of animals in research, according to the European Animal Research Association.

Eara, which campaigns for the ethical use of animals in research until alternatives can be found, spoke to the coordinators of various national agreements to mark the milestone. It reported this month that there are 163 signatories to such agreements in Spain, 125 in the UK, 103 in Germany, 42 in France, 26 in Switzerland, 24 in Portugal and 17 in Belgium.
