Research spending looks safe amid political upheaval

“Alles neu macht der Mai” is a German saying in praise of the springtime renewal of all things. The British are more cautious: “Never cast a clout until May is out” means that one should not pack away winter clothing too hastily, as May can still surprise with storms.

The biggest renewal this May will be the European elections. After the upheaval of Brexit at the end of March, the EU’s policymakers will have barely two months to form a new European Parliament that will be 46 seats smaller as a result of the UK leaving. Old alliances look set to break and new political factions may rise.
