Universities face increasing difficulties in recruiting disadvantaged young people, says Neil Harrison.

A report from the UK’s Social Mobility Commission published at the end of April said that inequality is entrenched in the country “from birth to work”. Martina Milburn, chair of the commission, said it was essential to “find a way to maximise the talent of all our citizens, especially those that start the furthest behind”.
