The shift to online working weakens bonds of trust in research networks, writes Robert Dingwall
Working remotely is all very well for those of us with a suitable space at home, but it is burning through the network capital required to organise or join large research consortia.
The EU increasingly funds research networks that spread across several countries and institutions, uniting academics with partners in government, business or civil society. This reduces administrative costs in Brussels by outsourcing much of the grant management to consortia. It also helps to promote a common European space with shared standards of scientific practice, financial integrity, diversity and equality.
