Another year of the pandemic has given universities a lot to reflect on

As 2021 draws to a close, academics across Europe are anticipating the Christmas holidays with a hint of wariness. Campuses—many only open since September—may have to close again if the Omicron variant proves to be more resistant to existing vaccines than previous versions of Covid. 

The prospect of more uncertainty again highlights a debate that has come to the fore this year: whether universities are fit for purpose.
