 Winter is coming—and across Europe, researchers, university staff and students are bracing against a chill wind of energy price rises and spiralling living costs. As temperatures drop, institutions and individuals are having to decide how to approach the coming months amid growing financial pressures.

As our European correspondents report, most institutions are already taking measures to cut their energy use, such as reducing the temperature of buildings. Some, including the University of Strasbourg in France, are planning extended winter breaks to curb their energy bills.
