Longstanding challenges for research must be dealt with in 2024
In many ways, the past year has been a thankfully steady one for research. Despite changes at the top of EU R&I policy—including a new commissioner in Iliana Ivanova, and new lead R&I official in Marc Lemaître—the day-to-day environment for research has been more stable than in 2022, when Europe was rocked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent soaring inflation.
There was even—finally—a welcome end to one long-running uncertainty: the UK’s Horizon Europe membership. The announcement in September that the UK is rejoining the programme signalled an end to a sorry saga that has plagued research collaborations since Brexit, even if partnerships will still take time to rebuild.
