Call for clear science strategy

New Zealand needs a national strategy on science if it is to realise its potential as a knowledge economy, the Sustainable Future Institute think tank said in a report published on 16 February.

The study, which charts government-funded science and its challenges, calls for a “clear set of shared values” to drive public funding of research as well as a strategic intent, including informing public policy and improving the health and wealth of New Zealand’s population.

The aim of supported science activities should also be to meet global challenges, such as food and energy shortages, the report said.
