New Zealand sets out plan for Māori science

A total of NZ$1.9 million (US$1.45m) is to be spent on building the science and innovation capacity of the Māori community over the next two years, the government has announced.

In a statement on 15 April, science minister Steven Joyce outlined 17 programmes that would be supported with the funds. These include projects looking at indigenous innovation, health research and environmental sustainability.

The fund will support two-year research projects involving Māori scientists, to help them build links with research institutions across the country.
