China seeks global influence through research centres

New Zealand must take a “more serious” view of China’s potential political influence on research and tertiary education, a leading foreign policy academic has warned.

University of Canterbury political author and journal editor, Anne-Marie Brady says that China’s global power is growing and it is using trade and university partnerships to expand its influence.

Speaking at a conference in the United States, Brady said that China is  “making a massive investment” in setting up foreign-based think tanks and research centres to help shape global public opinion.
