Otago study shows record rise in HIV infections

Gay health support groups have called for urgent government action to tackle an increase in the number of people infected with HIV in New Zealand.

A report by the AIDS epidemiology group at the University of Otago in Dunedin has found that more people in NZ were diagnosed with HIV in 2016 than in any year since monitoring began in 1985.

The majority of those diagnosed with HIV lived in Auckland (59 per cent), and the highest age group affected (36 per cent) were those under 30 years.
