University of Auckland vice-chancellor Stuart McCutcheon has clashed with NZ prime minister Bill English over comments that appear to suggest the government will back plans for a third medical school.
During a visit to Hamilton on 11 July, English (above) praised the strong level of local support for a proposal by Waikato University and the Waikato District Health Board to set up a regional medical school specifically to train rural doctors.
English said that Nationals party MPs in the Waikato region had been “relentless” in their lobbying for the plan.
