NZ challenges Japan’s bid to revive whaling

New Zealand foreign minister Gerry Brownlee has warned Japan that it is “seriously undermining” global conservation initiatives by continuing to promote whaling as scientific research.

In a formal statement, Brownlee said the NZ government “is extremely disappointed that Japan has passed new legislation that commits to subsidising its whaling fleet.”

“Attempts to artificially increase consumer demand for whale meat are a step backwards for the conservation of whales,” he said.
