Praise for ‘high calibre’ Māori digital tech projects

The NZ government has announced grants worth $3.6 million in the first round of the Ka Hao Māori digital technology development fund.

The 20 successful applicants include Auckland computer games design studio Metia Interactive, app developers Digital Natives Aotearoa and the Smart Fish digital education “accelerator”, which aims to encourage more Māori secondary students to study science and technology.

On its website, the fund says many of the projects that were funded “offered hands-on learning experiences, and several offered apprenticeships or internships doing real work for fee clients.”
