Record increase in NZ family violence incidents

More than 50 per cent of New Zealand women have been subjected to physical and emotional abuse from their partners, according to the University of Auckland’s national research centre for family violence.

An analysis of police records by the NZ Family Violence Clearinghouse shows that family violence reached “a record high” in 2016, with an increase of more than 8,000 reports.

The study also found that one in three (35 per cent) NZ women said they had been physically abused by a partner, and a further 20 per cent had experienced psychological abuse.
