Agency has worries about clean energy monopolies

Tax breaks for clean energy research and “patent buyouts” to resolve intellectual property conflicts are among New Zealand climate change initiatives suggested by an independent agency that reviews government policy.

The New Zealand Productivity Commission says that innovation and “disruptive new technologies” will play a critical role in reducing the country’s greenhouse emissions.

But it warns that innovation must be rewarded and encouraged to happen “at the scale and speed required”.
