NZ laureate to encourage more Pacific Islands writers

University of Auckland academic Selina Tusitala Marsh will take up a two-year appointment as New Zealand’s poet laureate

She takes over the influential literary post from 84-year-old novelist, poet and literary critic Christian Karlson Stead.

Accepting the award on 25 August, Marsh paid tribute to her mother who “spoke no English when she came from Samoa” to live in NZ.
