Jackson says NZ government ignoring UN declaration

A leading Māori lawyer has accused the New Zealand government of “having no regard” for the UN declaration of the rights of Indigenous people.

Speaking at a public event at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa, Jackson said the government refused to support the UN declaration when it was passed by the UN general assembly in 2007.

He said that despite formally recognising the declaration in April 2010, the government will not allow it to be used as part of Māori legal negotiations for land-settlement claims.
