Social media not investing in quality NZ journalism, says AUT

New Zealand’s news companies have become “dangerously dependent” on social media traffic to attract readers but have gained no financial support for journalism from these platforms, an Auckland University of Technology report has warned.

The report says that Google and Facebook have “not invested any money in New Zealand journalism” but news companies have felt pressured to make social media part of their distribution plan.

It suggests that this has led to an overemphasis on producing video clips and podcasts, at the expense of journalism that seeks to hold governments to account at both national and local levels.
