Hot summer a sign of ‘alarming trend’ for NZ climate change

New Zealand experienced its joint second-hottest year on record in 2018, with summer temperatures more than two degrees above average, a government agency report has said.

The annual climate summary published by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says that annual temperatures in 2018 were “above average across the majority of New Zealand” and “well above average” in some areas of the lower North Island.

The Tasman Sea and NZ coastal waters were also affected by “a marine heatwave”, with sea surface temperatures up to four degrees above average during summer.
