Working families struggling to escape ‘poverty trap’ says study

One in ten children affected by poverty and 9 per cent of Pacific Islands households

 More than 50,000 working households across New Zealand are living in poverty, with the highest rates among single parents, Māori and Pacific Islands families, according to research conducted by Auckland University of Technology.

The study, which was commissioned by the NZ Human Rights Commission, found that 10 per cent of children living in working households were affected by poverty.
