Australia’s bushfire smoke causes carbon monoxide spike in NZ

National research institute records ‘unprecedented’ levels of carbon monoxide near to the ground

Australia’s east coast bushfires are affecting air quality in New Zealand and leading to high levels of carbon monoxide and particulates, according to data recorded by a government research institute.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says the carbon monoxide readings peaked last week at more than 150 parts per billion and are “unprecedented”. Measurements are usually around 60 parts per billion.
