‘Surprise link’ found between health and Māori language

New Zealanders who speak te reo Māori have a reduced risk of progressing from high blood sugar and other early symptoms of diabetes to type 2 diabetes, a National Science Challenge study has found.

Scientists from the University of Otago’s Wellington campus and the University of Waikato assessed more than 14,000 patients with prediabetes, or early warning signs of type 2 diabetes.

The results are published in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. They link primary healthcare records with Statistics New Zealand data to analyse progression rates for prediabetes.
