New Zealand companies should try to force global technology giants such as Facebook and Google to be more accountable for their content following terrorist attacks that killed 50 people in Christchurch, a University of Auckland academic has said.
Susan Watson, a corporate law professor, said many businesses were questioning the “reputational value” of these global companies after distressing footage from the shootings was posted online.
The attacks, at two mosques in Christchurch, were carried out by a lone Australian gunman who used a video camera to broadcast the shootings on social media.
