NZ media ‘showed compassion’ in Christchurch reports

An unbiased and “very different” perspective of Muslims was shown by New Zealand’s media in its coverage of the Christchurch terrorist attacks, according to an editorial by an Auckland education academic.

Toni Bruce, a sociology professor at the University of Auckland, wrote the editorial in collaboration with Farzana Noorzai, a Muslim primary school teacher who migrated to NZ from Afghanistan. It was published by Newsroom, an independent NZ online news outlet.

In the editorial, Noorzai says prime minister Jacinda Ardern showed “kindness and sympathy” in her response to the attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, where 50 people were killed by an Australian political extremist.
