Growth in numbers could cause irreversible decline in environmental quality, says commissioner

New Zealand’s tourism boom is creating an “environmental burden” that threatens to destroy the qualities that make the country such an attractive destination, a government report has warned.

Simon Upton, the NZ parliamentary commissioner for the environment, says more detailed research is needed to identify tourism trends and environmental pressures.
