Most defendants, including New Zealand’s top geological research organisation, delay pleas over volcanic eruption
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the 2019 Whakaari White Island volcanic explosion, but most defendants have delayed the entering of pleas.
The safety authority WorkSafe is prosecuting 13 individuals and organisations, including GNS Science, New Zealand’s top geological research organisation. The eruption in December 2019 killed 22 people, most of whom were tourists.
