Defra: government buying standards for food catering – schools project

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has issued a call for tenders for a pilot introduction of Government Buying Standards for food and catering in schools.

This focus is a pilot study on the introduction of Government Buying Standards, a set of criteria intending to improve the sustainability of food produced for the public sector, in schools in England. Six to eight schools will be selected for participation, after which the contractor will introduce the GBS for food and catering services into their catering and hospitality provision. The challenges, barriers and opportunities that exist in introducing GBS will be reported back to Defra.
